Gary Nguyen Interview
I started to fall in love with episode 3

- Thank you Gary Nguyen for your time for the Fans.

Thank you, I grateful for this interview.

- Gary, When was the time you knew you wanted to be an actor?

It sounds crazy but when I was in high school, everyone kept saying I will grow up working in the industry. I used to sing in high school, not professionally, just to sing my heart out, I guess I was the less shy kid in my class, so the teacher always have me do that to entertain the class. It sticks to the point anything involves singing they will elect me to do.

I enjoyed American pop culture growing up, because of my Mom had other expectations for me, she wanted to become a doctor or lawyer, so I had to study hard and shift my focus.

Until my Dad brought me to the US at my the age of 17, I started to get exposed to more things, it gave me more freedom thinking, that eventually led me into researching and networking for resources, I began at 2013 on and off due to school and making a living, then Covid happened, I decided to fully working as an actor.

- Among other things, you played in "Skeleton Crew" an At Attin Analyst. Were you a Star Wars fan before you got cast?

Yes, just like many Star Wars fans, I grew up watching the original trilogy, until I started to fall in love with episode 3, I am all in, I bought my first FX light saber from Sharper Image on Xmas 2005, cover myself with a blanket, act like a Jedi around my house, and doing the Vader breathing until everyone got sick and tired of it, they started to make fun of me, only then I would stop.

I think it’s fate when I got a booking for a show called Home Economics, the scene also related to Star Wars when the siblings went to Galaxy’s Edge at Disney Land, I was lucky enough to be seen standing next to Chewie and one of the main cast.

After that, I saw postings for Mando and Kenobi, I submitted so many times, but I never got a response. Then 3 months later when I was about to move on, I got a text from casting of Skeleton Crew, and the rest is history.

- Gary ,Could you share some funny, remarkable, weird stories regarding the filming of your scenes ?

Working on any projects involved Disney, everything become a secret, they made you sign a lot of NDA, they took your phone away during filming, you can’t even bring your phone to the dressing room, then after you changed into your costume, they made you put on a robe to cover yourself from head to toes, so that paparazzi can’t take pictures of you and leak them out online. I didn’t feel pressured but just felt weird, none of the other projects I worked on was this strict. Some actor needs to use their phone because they have to check their emails for other bookings, some needs to check on their children, etc. when they have an emergency, someone will give them their phone back, but they will be supervised until they return the phone after.

Everything you see on the episode was filmed on a green screen, they had me and other actors to stand on a platform and reacted as it was an earthquake happening, without telling us anything about the plot. Especially people who had to wear alien costumes, they can’t see or hear in that heavy suit, so they had to interact with me in one scene, it felt a bit awkward yet it was fun.

– With a role in an Star Wars Series like Skeleton Crew comes a Big Fan Community, what are your first star wars fan experiences?

I never expected people to recognize me since I didn’t have a speaking role, but for the first time, someone actually reached out to me online and asked if he could send me postcard, then have me sign and return it in the mail. I am very surprised and thankful at the same time.

- You also work in series like 911 , S.W.A.T , For all Mankind... . What is your personal Highlight so far?

I think I was lucky enough to work on many the major studios projects Netflix, HBO, and Disney.

I am just thankful to work on Netflix The Brothers Sun, I know they canceled it, but I owed a lot to Michelle Yeoh and everyone from that series. I got my SAG card because of the show, and many more opportunities came after I joined SAG, it led to Skeleton Crew.

- Is there something special you would love to do in the future? Maybe another role in Star Wars? Or a special actor to work with?

Of course, I want to explore more roles in the future. For Star Wars, I hope they can create something that potentially involve my character, but if I can play another role, I wouldn’t say no. I had my share of encounters with actors, but I do want to work with Ke Huy Quan some days

- Thank you for your time Gary Nguyen! Let’s end this interview with some words for the fans?

Hey fans, I am thank you for the recognition, it means a lot. I know they say don’t stop dreaming to motivate you, but for me when you dream about something, you need to find a way to work towards it and make that dream come true, if that means you have to make sacrifices, because believe me when you reached your goals, it is well worth it.

- Thank you and i hope to see you some day on a German Star Wars Convention.

Thank you. I hope so too when the opportunity presents itself
