Barry Hanley Interview
I'd love to gear up as a Gamorrean again
- Thank you Barry Hanley for your time for the Fans.
- When was the time you knew you wanted to be an actor?
I wanted to be a stuntman from the age of 5 or 6 watching the Fall Guy TV show in my Gran's house in Ireland. Getting paid to crash cars and jump off buildings seemed like an impossible dream back then.
- Among other things, you played in "The Mandalorian" an Gamorrean Fighter . Were you a Star Wars fan before you got cast?
Yes. I was a massive Star Wars fan before getting cast as the Gamorrean Fighter on the Mandalorian. I had the Millenium Falcon toy as a kid and went to see all of the first 3 movies multiple times with my friends in Ireland. We absolutely loved Star Wars. Han Solo was always my favourite. Always cool under pressure and good for the wise cracks.
- Barry ,Could you share some funny, remarkable, weird stories regarding the filming of your scenes ?
There were a lot of funny stories that happened filming Mando. While Matt Shadden (RIP) and I were getting spray painted green Jon Favreau and Robert Rodriguez came in and had a laugh that an Irish guy was getting sprayed green. Also Matt Shadden's helmet went on fire very briefly during our fight. We smelled burning between takes. The battery pack in the back overheated and lit up. Pretty crazy stuff. Also the main Mando stunt double Lateef Crowder Dos Santos is a very funny guy. He always has a few jokes and is full of mischief
The highlight for me was having a chat with Temeura Morrison aka Jake the Muss AKA Bobba Fett. An absolute gentleman and a big rugby fan like myself. One of the funniest stunt stories I have is my very first job on Olympus has Fallen. I played a Secret Service agent in the White House. We get overpowered by Korean terrorists. One of them sprays us all with machine gun fire. The blanks were fired off set and I was the only one who didn't fall over. When the smoke cleared the Stunt Coordinator asked me was I deaf or bulletproof. ha ha. Not a stellar beginning to my career.
- Barry , you worked for so many Movies and series like The Mandalorian , Walker ,NCIS New Orleans.... What was your personal Highlight?
The highlight of my career thus far was working on Black Panther in Busan, South Korea. We shut down an entire bridge for a few weeks and filmed the car chase sequence. I also got to fire hundreds of blank machine gun rounds out the back window of an SUV speeding through the narrow streets near the Jigalchi fish market at night. It was the best Saint Patricks Day celebration ever had.
- But you not only an actor , you worked for Movies like "Ant-Man and the Wasp" , "Black Panther" , "Big George Foreman" and many other as stuntman. Could you share something about your work?
Another fun and challenging night was getting bulldogged off a horse on the remake of Roots. We did the gag 7 or 8 times and the horse bolted into the night almost taking my head off on a tree limb. Crazy night. Made it out of there with just a few bruises though thank God.
- Is there something special you would love to do in the future? Maybe another role in Star Wars? Or something special work as stuntman?
If there is anything Star Wars related I'd love to do it would be to gear up as a Gamorrean again in a fight school story about a Gamorrean's journey to become a champion. Call me Disney. I'm ready!!
- Thank you for your time Barry Hanley! Let’s end this interview with some words for the fans?
Thanks Bernd. If you ever need me to appear at a Con in Germany I would love to visit.
All the very best,
Barry Hanley,
- Thank you and i hope to see you some day on a German Star Wars Convention.
