Reno Reyes Interview
I was ecstatic to recreate a classic death straight out of the comic book!
- Hello Reno Reyes and thank you for your time for the Fans.
- When was the time you know you want to be an actor?
I think I have always been attracted to storytelling and storytellers. From comic books, TV, movies, storybooks, and novels. I can distinctively remember watching "The Fisher King" starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges in the theatre as a young adult and something shifted in me artistically—I was overwhelmed with their performances and left that theatre inspired and "haunted" at the same time... I believe that was when the initial seed was planted in my brain. Many years later I was working on the film, "The Infiltrator" and was lucky enough to have a front row seat to watch Bryan Cranston and John Leguizamo do their thing!
- 2017 you worked in one of my Favorite series. "The Walking Dead" How did you get cast for the role as one of Negan´s Saviors?
I put in for a casting call, but had no idea what it was for. I was a fan of the comic book and was thrilled when I received the casting invitation to be a "Savior" with Negan!
- Your role as savior gets famously killed by Shiva. How was the moment your realize that you will be killed by a Tiger?
Horror legend Greg Nicotero directed that episode and on the day, offered me a choice on how I wanted to go out--being a Walking Dead comic book fan, I was ecstatic to recreate a classic death straight out of the comic book!!
- With a role in TWD comes a Big Fan Community, what are your first The Walking Dead fan experiences?
I believe some of my earliest and most vivid experiences were at the "Walker Stalker" conventions. For the most part, fan interactions have always been a fun time and it really is great being part of the Walking Dead Family.
- There are so many series you worked in ( TWD , The Purge, Queen of the South.....) What was your personal highlight so far?
I've had many cool experiences so far. I really enjoyed working on TWD and learned so much from being in front of the camera, but also learned a lot by watching the crew and technicians working together for a singular goal. In the movie, "White Elephant" I got to have an on-screen shoot-out with Bruce Willis and that is something that I never thought would happen in a million years!! Queen of the South was a huge turning point as they really took me under their wing and gave me confidence as a performer-even did some minor stunts! It's also where I earned my SAG card.
- Reno, you also worked in Blockbusters like "Bad Boys for Life" with Will Smith or "Godzilla II: King of the Monsters" . Something you can share with us about filming these Movies?
Bad Boys and Godzilla were HUGE productions. And typically, in big productions, everything takes longer, but the wait never bothers me as I truly enjoy being on-set. During Bad Boys For Life, I had the opportunity to spend a long overnight shoot watching directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah work closely with the stunt team, actors, and crew to orchestrate an awesome action sequence. I also had some insightful conversations with Nicky Jam who was also in that scene. As per Godzilla, I am such a life-long fan that it was such a surreal experience walking around that set. My inner kid was doing somersaults!! The initial casting process took months and when I was finally selected to play one of Charles Dance's (Game of Thrones), mercenaries, we had to attend boot camp and firearms/ tactical training. I loved every bit of it! I was initially supposed to get killed off by Ghidorah during an intense snow sequence but that never materialized. Maybe next time!!
- What will we see next from you? Any projects/movies/series?
I can currently be seen in supernatural thriller, "Skeletons In The Closet" along with the fantastic Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr and Udo Kier. It's streaming on Shudder and AMC+ . I believe the studios are re-releasing "MR-9: Do Or Die" which is a really cool International Spy Thriller where I play, "Rafi"; a cold-blooded killer! It stars Frank Grillo, Michael Jai White, and Abm Sumon as the titular character. I have several other films scheduled to drop this year including "Desert Dawn", "Eight Days To Cabo", and "A Family Affair" with Zac Efron, Joey King, and Nicole Kidman. I can also be seen in a very cool upcoming HBO crime show. I'm very fortunate that I have been featured on action films, crime capers, supernatural/horror yarns, and romantic comedies!
- Is there any dream role or actor/actress you would loved to work in the future?
I'm a big comic book/sci-fi geek and would love to work on a Star Wars, Star Trek, Predator or Alien Film! I would also love to work again with Clint Eastwood or Sylvester Stallone.
- Is there anything else you would like to let TWD Fans and your fans know?
A had a blast working on TWD and I am a fan of the show just as much as they are. I think people might be surprised that in addition to playing one of Negan's toughest Saviors and was eaten by "Shiva" the Tiger, I was asked by production to change my look and return as a one of the infamous "Bow Saviors" who shot arrows "tainted" with zombie guts at the delicate "Hilltop" survivors! My original Savior character even returned from the dead TWICE; in Michonne's final episode of the main series and in S11E5 Aaron's nightmare sequence where I was the last Savior seen on the series! I was also Cooper Andrew's (Jerry's) on/off stand-in, and I also illustrated prop comic books that were featured as set dressing on TWD: World Beyond!
- Thank you being my guest Reno Reyes and best wishes for the future. I hope to see you one day in Germany.
Vielen Dank. Me too!
